Biography of Debra Lafave
Born Debra Jean Beasley in the US state of Florida on August 28, 1980, Debra LaFave (as she is widely known), a middle school teacher, was convicted of sexually assaulting a minor. Nothing is known about her father, but her mother (whose name is unknown) was diagnosed with cancer for the second time during her daughter’s trial.
Growing up as a child with her family, the blonde beauty didn’t have it easy as she suffered from depression and trauma, including eating disorders. She was even diagnosed and treated for bipolar disorder. All these facts were related to the fact that she had been raped at the age of 13 and that she had also lost her older sister to a sudden death, after being killed in a car accident by a drunk driver.
Debra Lafave attended Bloomingdale High School in Valrico, Florida before going to the University of South Florida where she majored and earned a degree in English Literature because she always wanted to be a teacher. It was during her first job as a teacher, which she got after graduating from college, that she was embroiled in the scandal that would keep her out of any class for her entire life.
sex scandal
After reading the brief introduction to this article one might wonder how a beautiful, married teacher, who is supposed to be a role model for the little girl in her care, turns into a devastating sex offender with a student under half her age. age at the time? It was in May 2004 that the problem was brought to light.
Debra Lafave had left with an unnamed 14-year-old boy at her cousin’s house with Lafave accompanying him as a “girlfriend”. However, it wouldn’t end with just a visit because the boy’s aunt (mother of the cousin they were going to visit), who probably wasn’t supposed to be home on the day of the visit was home and saw his nephew with an older woman who was dressed sexually.
The sight worried her and she began to call her sister (the boy’s mother) reported what she had seen and when he came home his mother demanded to know who this woman was with him and even s he was reluctant to reveal his identity, he would eventually and so the Tampa police were called to the case.
Debra Lafave, a schoolteacher at Angelo L. Greco Middle School in Temple Terrace, Florida, was revealed to have had sex with the student (minor age 14) at least three times in four days , including once in the back of a car driven around his 15-year-old cousin. She had also performed multiple oral sex on the minor and even brought him to her marital home during one of their sexual episodes.
At the time of this event, Debra Lafave was newlywed to Owen Lafave and their marriage was about a year old. She was arrested and charged with two counts of sexual and lewd violence and faces up to 30 years in prison after being convicted of the offence.
However, the victim’s family never wanted to spend time in prison, as they feared it would happen to their son (the publicity generated by the case was already having a detrimental effect on him). He was therefore offered to negotiate a plea which would allow him to avoid the trial. The defense team accepted her, which resulted in her being convicted and therefore losing her teaching license.
Lafave was sentenced to 10 years – 7 years of sex probation and 3 years of community service and house arrest – in 2006. She was on the sex offense registry, ordered the imposition of a restraining order restriction prohibiting access to children and the injunction to stay at home before 10 p.m. each day. Many observers believe the sentence given was far too lenient for the crime, while others argued that a man’s sentence would have been just as light if the tables had been turned.
His probation was ended with four years left by a court in September 2011, much to the chagrin of the victim’s family who appealed the decision. Thus, the probation was reinstated by the Second District Court of Appeals, a year later, in August 2012. However, Debra Lafave took the case to the Florida Supreme Court, which ruled in her favor. two years later, in October 2014.

Following the scandal and his subsequent arrest in 2004, their marriage suffered. In 2005, she and Owen divorced.
Owen appeared on several TV shows and spoke about the scandal and also hinted that he felt his ex-wife was dumped so easily. However, that didn’t stop the blue-eyed beauty from finding love again. She got engaged to Shawn Haverfield, a restaurant owner in Florida, and she had twins born in 2011 – for him. It is unclear whether they got married or not, but their relationship did not last as in 2016 they were in court for custody of their children.
